A Conservative MP today issues a warning against any Conservative alliance with the Brexit Party after a hard-line Brexiter in his party called for a pact with Nigel Farage at the next General Election.
Sam Gyimah MP, a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“The very suggestion of the Conservative and Unionist Party forming an electoral alliance with Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party should send a chill down the spine of anyone who believes our party stands for sensible government in the national interest.”
“Call me old fashioned, but I can’t get my head round this New Conservatism, which wants to turn the party into a one issue, Brexit Party. What happened to the old Conservatism that set out to be a broad church by being pro-business, helping people get on in life and preserving the Union?”
“The reality of the situation is that Nigel Farage is harvesting grievance and it’s something he is very good at – but you can’t govern in grievance. The kind of future the Brexit Party want places the most successful political and economic union in history at risk and it is not something any responsible Government should take lightly.”
