The Government have refused to let Parliament vote on the Brexit deal before Christmas.
Commenting, Chris Bryant MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“The Government’s further postponement of a vote on the Brexit deal is just another sign of the fundamental problem facing its supporters: they promised we would continue to enjoy ‘the exact same benefits’ of being in the EU, while ‘taking back control’. But this deal shows these promises will be broken – not because the Government won’t keep them - but because they can’t be kept; no one can keep promises that are contradictory.
“Ministers know the warm words and supportive letters that are the best the Prime Minister can hope for from her trips round European capitals will not change the basic arithmetic. There is no form of Brexit that can meet all the promises made in the last referendum or a deal for leaving Europe as good as the one we’ve got in Europe and delaying the vote in Parliament will not change those simple facts.
“Now we know what Brexit looks like, the public should be given the opportunity to decide in a People’s Vote – is this the kind of deal we want, or is the deal we already have in the EU better? In the end, only the people can sort this out.
“The whole point of Parliament is to make decisions. If Parliament cannot do that, then we should give the people the final say.”
