Appearing on The Andrew Marr Show this morning, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party Tom Watson suggested his party is moving towards backing a People’s Vote and that if Labour cannot get support for its alternative Brexit plan, he is ready to go on the Put It To The People march on March 23.
This adds to growing calls from senior Labour figures for the party to back a People’s Vote, as well as the GMB trade union setting out their support for a People’s Vote that would be a choice between the Government’s deal or keeping our current deal in the EU.
Responding, Bridget Phillipson MP, a leading supporter of People’s Vote, said:
“In recent days, leading figures in Labour's Shadow Cabinet like John McDonnell and Tom Watson, leaders of trade unions like Tim Roache at the GMB and Manuel Cortes from the TSSA, and even Leave supporters on the backbenches like John Cryer, have shown they will stand up for what their rank-and-file members want on Brexit. They know there are growing calls from the grassroots to give the people the final say about whether we go ahead with a Brexit deal that will make us poorer - or stick with the deal we've already got inside the EU.
“If Labour's own Brexit plan is rejected by Parliament, Tom Watson is absolutely right to say the best way to unite the Labour Party will be to implement conference policy and back a People's Vote. It's great news that he says he's ready to come on the Put It To The People march on Saturday March 23. It's going to be a massive event so we'll need to save a place for him near the front.”
