Commenting on the unanimous Supreme Court ruling against the Prime Minister’s decision to prorogue Parliament, Ian Murray MP, one of the petitioners in the Court of Session case on which the Supreme Court ruled this morning, said:
“This case has exposed the fundamental undemocratic arrogance of Boris Johnson and the Vote Leave fanatics he has installed in Downing Street.
“The Prime Minister broke the rules of democracy and has now been humbled by the courts. But we cannot trust him to protect our democracy or to act in any interest other than his own.
“The solution to the Brexit crisis, though, does not lie in the courts or even in Parliament, but in the hands of the people. We cannot trust Boris Johnson to make the right judgment on Brexit so we must give this decision back to the country as a whole.
“Boris Johnson must recognise that whatever form of Brexit he proposes, it must be put back to the people in a final say referendum.
“Only a People’s Vote offers a fair and democratic way to end the crisis and bring the clarity and certainty we all now need.”
