Commenting on the Chequers meeting of the Cabinet, Ben Bradshaw MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign said:
“As they squabble over our country’s future behind closed doors, the reality is that when ministers finally settle on a Brexit policy it will be agreed not on the basis of what is best for jobs, our public services or our security but on the basis of factional political calculation and clashing ambitions.
“Inevitably that means that, once the smoke has cleared and the briefing war is over, we are going to end up with a botched Brexit that will satisfy nobody.
“We won’t be taking back control, but losing our voice in key decisions. We won’t be securing the Irish peace process, but gambling with its future on a promise of magical technology. And we won’t be opening up to a future of global trade deals, but making it harder than ever to trade with our biggest export market.
“It is no wonder Parliament and the parties are so deeply split over this issue. It cannot be settled by establishment stitch-ups in Buckinghamshire mansions nor can it be solely in the hands of MPs. The only way to resolve this mess is through a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
