A photograph of Government documents has revealed that the codename for Brexit contingency plans is ‘Operation Yellowhammer’. It warns that government departments will have to make cuts to prepare for crashing out of the EU, saying: “Their first call should be internal reprioritisation.”
It also reveals that the plans are being overseen by the Civil Contingencies Secretariat, which is normally responsible for dealing with emergencies such as floods and disease outbreaks.
Commenting, Ben Bradshaw MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“With the Operation Yellowhammer revelation, we now know the Government is preparing for Brexit in the same way they’d approach catastrophes like flooding, a disease outbreak or a terrorist attack. This is not what anyone voted for in 2016.
“We were promised ‘sunlit uplands’, but what’s being delivered instead is a public policy disaster with severe implications for the future of our country. Medicines and food are being stockpiled, the value of the pound is taking a battering and companies and jobs are leaving.
“We know from this leak that it will be already-stretched budgets in vital areas like health, education and defence that will be forced to bear the cost of this Government’s total failure to deal with the mess of Brexit.
“It’s time for the people of this country to take back control of this process. That’s why calls are growing every day for a People’s Vote on the terms of Brexit, and it’s time for Westminster to listen.”
