Commenting on Sir John Major’s speech, Margaret Beckett MP, Co-Chair of the People’s Vote Political Committee, said:
“Sir John Major has given a devastating verdict on Boris Johnson and on his conduct of public affairs.
“He argues powerfully that the cut and run general election Johnson is so desperate to force on the British people is more likely to be divisive than decisive, especially when it comes to Brexit.
“Indeed, it might make matters worse, especially if the result were to be another hung parliament.
“Sir John argues that ministers’ desperation demonstrates their fear that an election held after we have been hit by the reality of a no deal Brexit would destroy their electoral chances.
“The plunge to new depths of political invective and the deliberate attempt to incite anger and promote division which the PM has displayed this week confirms that his suspicions may be well-founded.
“Only a final say referendum, which avoids mixing it up with a dozen other issues, will ever settle the Brexit question, which demands and deserves a clear answer from the British people.
“It is the best and the most democratic answer.”
