Commenting on the Prime Minister’s speech in Grimsby, Rt. Hon. Margaret Beckett MP, leading supporter of People’s Vote, said:
“The Brexit process has become a national humiliation and nowhere is this clearer than in position of the Prime Minister herself.
“Today she has been left as a supplicant to the EU, begging them to reverse and revise an agreement of which she herself was the principal author and which she hailed as a triumph for her diplomacy only a matter of weeks ago.
“She has, in effect, admitted that she may be heading for another defeat in Parliament on her plan and that, despite repeated appeasement of Jacob Rees-Mogg, Steve Baker and the other leaders of the ERG, she has failed to make any progress.
“This is not the fault of the Prime Minister so much as a reflection of the reality of Brexit itself. Any Brexit deal will break the promises made for it in 2016 and will leave us worse off. Any Brexit deal will see years, if not decades, of endless rows, renegotiations and job and investment-killing uncertainty.
“Now that we know all this, with new facts on the table, its reasonable – it’s only fair – for people to ask that they should take the final decision on whether or not to proceed with the discredited Brexit deal.”
