Reports suggest Boris Johnson will attempt to prorogue Parliament by asking the Queen to give a new Queen’s Speech on October 14th, meaning Parliament would be suspended from mid-September until just before the current Brexit deadline of October 31st.
Commenting, Margaret Beckett MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Boris Johnson and his Government are trashing the constitution. This is a Government with no majority of its own in Parliament. While Parliament is not even sitting, he is disgracefully dragging the Queen into the heart of the most difficult and dangerous exploitation of the usual powers of Government.
“In the referendum Boris Johnson promised the people a great deal. Now he is trying to force on us a No Deal for which neither the people nor Parliament have voted.
“In the leadership campaign he said he wanted to restore Parliamentary sovereignty. Now he is trying to govern without Parliament.
“The only way to deliver a lasting and stable resolution to the Brexit crisis is to give the public the final say, something Boris Johnson seems determined to deny them.”
