Commenting on the Prime Minister’s statement, Margaret Beckett MP, joint chair of the People’s Vote campaign Political Committee, said:
“The anti-climax of Boris Johnson’s statement outside Downing Street reveals his fear that he does not have a majority for his scorched-earth Brexit - either in Parliament or in the country.
“He is now trying to force an undemocratic Brexit through Parliament by threatening One Nation Conservatives with deselection, hinting at a snap election or even allowing aides to say he might break the law by refusing to obey legislation passed by MPs.
“Three years ago, in the last referendum, he promised everyone that Britain would get a great deal - but everyone knows he has no meaningful plan to negotiate one with Brussels in the few weeks remaining before the Brexit deadline.
“The only legitimate way to settle the crisis is to go back to the people and ask them in a final say referendum if they really want to go ahead now that we know so much more about what his Brexit would mean.
“But, like all bullies, Boris Johnson is scared of something. The irony is, that for someone who poses as a populist, it turns out he’s scared of the people.”
