The Prime Minister spoke in Belfast today, in an attempt to reassure Northern Ireland businesses of her commitment to ensuring no return to a hard border on the island of Ireland.
Commenting, Guto Bebb MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, stated:
“Theresa May’s answers in Belfast today prove beyond any doubt there won’t be any substantial changes to her Brexit deal, which has already been rejected by a historically large majority of MPs. Instead, she’s going through the motions with the EU, letting the clock tick down further, and then will try again to force through her deal that doesn’t command the support of Parliament, doesn’t command the support of the public, and is a bad deal for the future of our country.
“It’s not only just about the backstop, this is a bad deal, full stop. It will mean years more of Brexit uncertainty and endless future negotiations with our largest trading partner, meaning yet more damage to jobs, investment and prosperity. The bad news from big companies like Nissan and Airbus over the last few months is just the start.
“Instead of trying to force MPs into passing a deal that’s already been emphatically rejected, Theresa May needs to give the final say on Brexit back to the public through a People’s Vote.”
