Commenting on Sir Jeffrey Donaldson MP’s opposition to No Deal, Guto Bebb MP, Conservative former defence minister and leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“It is good to see Sir Jeffrey Donaldson recognising that No Deal would be very bad news for Northern Ireland. The report from the Northern Ireland Department for the Economy, warning of 40,000 jobs at risk just rams home that point.
“Jeffrey and I share a commitment to keeping Northern Ireland in the union. We both also want to avoid Northern Ireland being separated from the UK single market: which is what would happen if there was a Brexit deal based on a Northern Ireland only Backstop.
“Yet with the EU determined to insist on a Backstop to keep the Irish border open, and Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt determined to avoid a UK-wide backstop, the only route to a deal that keeps them happy is just such a Northern Ireland-only carve off. But nobody in Northern Ireland, beyond the 500 or so Conservative members in the province, is being given any say on the matter. That is a democratic outrage and why we absolutely must have a People’s Vote on whatever comes out of the Brexit mess.”
