Commenting on Boris Johnson’s attempts to force an early election, Guto Bebb MP, former Conservative minister and leading supporter of People’s Vote, said:
“MPs should not be bounced into an election before we’ve some straight answers from Boris Johnson about what he’s really up to.
“He has made a series of contradictory promises to different groups of MPs. No one can trust Boris Johnson to keep any of them and he has already sold his former allies in the DUP down the river.
“We’ve had about five different versions about what his Brexit would mean for Northern Ireland’s border and this week the Chancellor has refused to tell us what the economic impact would be.
“At every stage in this crisis, Boris Johnson has shown contempt for Parliament and democracy. It remains possible for him to double-cross everyone and revive his ridiculous ‘do or die’ threat to crash out of the EU with No Deal at all.
“Until we have pinned him down on what he is really planning, it would be wrong to have a General Election where Brexit would be confused with every other issue under the sun.
“If Johnson really wants the people to deliver a verdict on his Brexit plan, he should give us the final say referendum which is the best, most democratic, way to solve this crisis and provide a lasting settlement. “
