Bebb – ERG only supporting Johnson’s Brexit proposals because it’s the fastest route to No Deal

The Conservative MP backbencher John Baron has admitted that members of his ERG faction are supporting Boris Johnson’s Brexit proposals because they see it as the fastest route to a disastrous No Deal by the end of 2020.

Speaking on Newsnight, he said: “What it means is that if there’s no deal struck in the transition period up to December 2020, the U.K. has the right to leave on No Deal terms”

Commenting, Guto Bebb MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“John Baron let the cat out of the bag last night. He admits that he and many of his fellow ideologues in the extremist Conservative faction of the ERG are supporting Boris Johnson’s Brexit proposals only because they see it as the fastest way to fulfil their No Deal fantasies. It is highly unlikely that any trade agreement between the UK and the EU can be reached in the time period set out in this withdrawal agreement, so they believe that getting Johnson’s proposals through Parliament means crashing out onto No Deal terms by the end of 2020.

“Boris Johnson’s deal-in-name-only must not be allowed to happen. It would mean this Brexit crisis going on for years and years to come, with workers’ rights and social protections left exposed for Boris Johnson to start shredding.

“As Parliament sits on Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people will be making their voices heard in the streets outside, demanding their right to have the final say on Brexit. MPs must listen to them, reject Boris Johnson’s hard Brexit plan, stop the plot to get No Deal through the back door - and then let the people have the final say.”
