Boris Johnson today delivered a speech to a fringe event at the Conservative Party conference in which he restated his opposition to the Prime Minister’s so-called ‘Chequers’ proposal for Brexit.
Commenting, Conservative MP Guto Bebb, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“More than two years since the referendum, Boris Johnson still has no answers to the difficult questions posed by Brexit. Like so many of the Brexit cheerleaders, faced with this national crisis he chose to cut and run. And today we saw that he simply can’t explain how any of the contradictory promises he made to voters can be delivered.
“He cannot explain how any Brexit deal will benefit the economy, he cannot explain how fantasy new trade deals will make up for lost trade with Europe, and he cannot explain how to avoid a return to a hard border on the island of Ireland.
“One thing that is clear from Boris Johnson’s speech is that there is no majority in Parliament for any form of Brexit. There’s no majority for a Boris Johnson-style hard Brexit, there’s no majority for a blindfold Brexit, there’s certainly no majority for a chaotic no deal Brexit, and even the most enthusiastic Brexiters hate the Prime Minister’s proposals.
“The only way out of this Brexit impasse is to let the people have the final say through a People’s Vote.”
