Commenting on Boris Johnson’s letter to Jeremy Hunt demanding he support leaving the EU on 31 October regardless of the circumstances, Guto Bebb MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Boris Johnson’s decision to commit himself to a 31 October exit from the EU regardless of the circumstances is reckless, dangerous and ultimately speaks to his personal problem of telling the truth.
“How can he seriously expect to be trusted as leader of the country when he says that he will crash out with No Deal even if we have nothing in place to safeguard the supply of drugs to the NHS or food to our supermarkets or even electricity in Northern Ireland and elsewhere? It is outrageous he would contemplate that simply to score points in an internal party election.
“I expect the leader of the Conservative Party to put the country first at all times. Not to make it an also-ran beside his ego.
“In 2016 Mr Johnson promised us we would leave with a deal. Now he is promising us he will leave with No Deal. It is neither democratic nor honest to pledge one thing and then plan for the opposite. It is no wonder a growing number of Conservatives have made it clear they are prepared to use their votes in Parliament to stop him if he tries it.“
