Why we need a People’s Vote on a final Brexit deal
We are campaigning for the people to be given their democratic right of a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.
Brexit is a big deal, but it is not a done deal and no deal, or bad deal, it is the people who must decide.
The People’s Vote is not about re-fighting the referendum of 2016. It is about everything that has happened since.
- Things like the new facts have come to light about the costs and complexity of Brexit that no one could have known two years ago. New facts like £50 billion divorce bill we will be forced to pay between now and 2064 simply to leave.
- Things like the broken promises made by politicians about Brexit, like more money for our NHS from Europe: instead we facts more cuts, hospitals in crisis and key staff shortages as staff from elsewhere in Europe leave.
- And, most of all, the way the politicians in Westminster have made a complete mess of Brexit. This mess now threatens to devastate our economy, destroy the future hopes of young people, as well as damage our public services and communities.
The 2016 referendum gave the Government a mandate to negotiate Britain’s departure from the EU. But two years later we still don’t know what any Brexit deal will look like, though it’s increasingly clear the Government will offer us either a bad deal or no deal.
It is already clear there is no majority in Parliament for whatever Theresa May will propose.
One thing unites everyone who backed Leave or Remain in 2016 with those who didn’t take part or were too young to be allowed a say: nobody voted for this botched Brexit, for the massive cost and for the increased uncertainty.
Brexit will affect generations for generations and it is vital for our democracy and our country that we now have a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.
