Commenting on the failure of Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt to condemn Donald Trump’s latest racist outburst, Tonia Antoniazzi MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“It should be shocking that neither Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt can bring themselves even to distance themselves from Donald Trump’s clearly racist words.
“The fact that no one is really surprised is merely another indication of how their desire to impose the harshest possible Brexit on the British people is already distorting our politics – and another warning of how supine our relationship would be with the outside world afterwards.
“We have already seen how Boris Johnson’s desperation to please Donald Trump meant he threw the UK’s ambassador to Washington under the US president’s bus last week. Now, with a host of pressing global issues from Iran to climate change, there is a real prospect that our country’s new Prime Minister will similarly bend their knee to Trump on all of them.
“The people of the UK did not vote to have control of our foreign policy handed over to a noxious Twitter troll in the White House. Nor did they vote for a trade deal with the US that will put chlorinated chicken on our supermarket shelves and the NHS ‘on the table’ for sale. The only democratic solution to this growing Brexit crisis is to let the public have the final say through a People’s Vote.”
